"From years of practicing Ashtanga and Dharma Mittra yoga and maintaining a yogic diet, she is stunningly flexible (yes, she can put her foot behind her head). To accommodate attendees of all abilities, Kali demonstrated several modified versions of each pose. Throughout the workshop, Kali wove in teachings from the Yoga Sutras and wisdom gleaned from her teachers."

HOLIDAY CHAKRA-BALANCING WORKSHOP

FULL PRACTICE + YOGA NIDRA
Saturday,  Nov. 16, 12-3 Central Time
Sweet Pea's Studio, 3717 N. Ravenswood (#213)

All levels; prior yoga experience recommended. Adults only.
$60 before 12/7, $70 after

4 SPOTS LEFT

Registration closes Sat. 11/16 at 9am

This mini-retreat will focus on specific yoga poses, practices and philosophy that purify the body and mind so that we can "clean house" and experience the peace and calm that is our birthright. This workshop will include asana, pranayama, mantra (chanting), mudra (hand gestures) and philosophy to clear and manage the chakras (energetic centers) and, more importantly, clear the 72,000 nadis or energy channels that run through the body; it is said that when the nadis are blocked, we suffer physically and mentally. This practice can have a powerful effect on one's mind/attitude as we go into the holiday season.

Our grounding, calming and complete practice will give you some "you" time to restore balance in the physical and energetic bodies so you can shine at your best. We will conclude with Yoga Nidra (psychic sleep; a lying-down meditation). We will also explore practical ways to maintain emotional balance and savor the moment during this uniquely stressful time.

Our asana practice is based on the healing hatha flow of Sri Dharma Mittra, which opens the hips and shoulders, makes the spine supple, and unleashes one's full energetic potential.  We will conclude with Yoga Nidra (psychic sleep; a calming, lying-down meditation).

Please note that studio space is extremely limited. Your spot is not guaranteed until payment is made and a comfirmation letter is received.

Tired of suffering? Stop trying to fix yourself or the world, and find out who you really are! This is the message of the Bhagavad-Gita, one of the core scriptures of yoga, which answers questions such as who am I, what is my purpose, and what is my place in the world. It was the first text to claim that the spiritual life is for everyone (not just renunciates) and expouses the paths of action (karma yoga), devotion (bhakti yoga), meditation (raja yoga) and knowledge (jnana yoga).

The Bhagavad-Gita (Song of God) consists of 18 chapters of the Mahabharata, and was composed in the first or second centure BCE by the sage Vyasa. It consists of a battlefield dialogue between Prince Arjuna and Krishna, an incarnation of the god Vishnu, and explores the nature of duty and moral action, the goal of life, and one's place in the world.

Our course will include open discussion, chanting, meditation and other practices to help us apply these timeless principles of yoga to daily life so that we become happier and less reactive. This ongoing course is suitable for anyone who is tired of suffering. No prior yoga or meditation experience is necessary.

Can't make a class? No problem! You will have access to the recording for 7 days.

Dharma Yoga is a flowing classical yoga originated by NYC-based yogi Sri Dharma Mittra and is suitable for students of all levels. Its foundation is the challenging-yet-meditative Shiva Namaskar vinyasa sequence, which purifies and energizes the body, calms the mind, and opens the hips and shoulders. Students are guided through the sequence according to their needs and abilities, and the emphasis is on practicing in a relaxed manner and feeling content. Class may conclude with a simple breathing exercise and brief meditation. Kali is the senior teacher of Dharma Yoga in Chicago and has completed Sri Dharma Mittra's 200, 500 and 800-hour trainings as well as his 500-hour refresher. From him, she received the name Yogi Kali Om.

Ashtanga Yoga is a challenging and dynamic series of poses linked together through coordinated breath and movement to create energy flow and an internal purifying heat. The rigorous sequence calms the mind and develops strength, balance, concentration and flexibility. Kali spent over 12 months studying directly with the source of ashtanga vinyasa yoga, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois – including five trips to India - and does her best to transmit the system as she learned it from him.

FACING FEAR WORKSHOP

FULL PRACTICE + YOGA NIDRA
"Even very little of this knowledge saves a man from the Great Fear"

-Bhagavad-Gita II.40

The Yoga Sutras states that all fear stems from avidya, or ignorance of one's true nature, and that it manifests in the fifth klesha (coloring) of abhinivesha, or fear of death. While we may not actively be afraid of death, it often manifests in other ways -- such as a fear of spiders, old age, dentists, public speaking/humiliation, heights, etc.

In this workshop,  we will learn how to identify and face our fears and anxieties so that they lose some of their hold over us, and we can experience the peace that is our true nature. We will also explore fear in our asana practice. You'll also leave with some pracatical tips for dealing with everyday worries.

"For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, his very mind will be the greatest enemy."

-Bhagavad-Gita

Having trouble with racing or negative thoughts? Learn simple, time-tested techniques to get to know and control your mind, and transform it from tormenter to humble servant. Suitable for all levels, this calming, grounding, and complete practice will leave you feeling refreshed, calm and focused. As Dharma Mittra says, "When the mind is quiet, you see the world with love."

It will include postures, chanting, pranayama, philosophy and meditation and other practices designed to help understand and tame your mind so you can focus on what is most important to you. Based on the classical, flowing system originated by New York City-based yogi Sri Dharma Mittra, its foundation is the dynamic Shiva Namaskar sequence - which opens the hips and shoulders, makes the spine supple, and unleashes one's full energetic potential.

Our philosophical focus will be the mind - what it consists of (antahkarana), its different states or fluctuations (vrittis), and its colorings or obstacles along the path to liberation (kleshas). Understanding the mind is the foundation of Raja (Royal) Yoga and leads to inner bliss.  We'll also cover some practical tips for keeping unhelpful thoughts at bay.

Anxious? Fatigued? Overbooked or feeling stuck? Sometimes, the bodymind, like a computer, needs a reboot; after we close the applications and re-start, everything works and feels much, much, better.

Restorative Yoga brings profound healing to our our stressed-out, overscheduled bodies and minds, and takes us from a place of "doing" to "being," so we can experience the yogic virtue of santosh(contentment). Poses are held from 3 to 15 minutes, and use props to help us relax and release on a deep level. Restorative yoga has the added benefit of releasing blocked prana (energy) and reducing chronic aches and pains.

We will conclude with Yoga Nidra: Deep Healing Relaxation. This is a longer, active, guided meditation done lying down, in the tradition of Sri Dharma Mittra. This deep state of relaxation or "yogic sleep" calms the mind, dispels tension, depresssion and fatigue, and supports the body's natural healing capabilities.

Together, these two practices can bring our bodymind back to a state of equilibrium.

Our studio is fully outfitted with all the props you'll need. If you're taking the class from home and don't have props, don't worry.  Blankets, books and winter scarves can be used; more ideas here.

Can't make it at noon? No problem; we'll send you a link to the recording, good for 72 hours.

This workshop will focus on yoga poses and practices to detoxify the body, boost immunity, improve lung function and manage moods -- including asana, pranayama, mantra (chanting), mudra (hand gestures) and philosophy.

Yogis have long known that a healthy colon can help ward off disease (in fact, western science claims that 75 percent of immunity is related to gut health), and this complete practice will help detoxify the body. It will also deepen our connection to what is permanent and unchanging.

We will also exlore practical ways to maintain emotional balance during this uniquely stressful time.

Based on the classical, flowing style originated by New York City-based yogi Sri Dharma Mittra, the foundation of our practice iis the dynamic Shiva Namaskar sequence - which opens the hips and shoulders, makes the spine supple, and unleashes one's full energetic potential. It is also a wonderful antidote to anxiety, tension and stress. We will conclude with Yoga Nidra (psychic sleep; a lying-down meditation

My teacher often says that "In the summer, people run around like insects." As we move towards fall, it is important to take some time to pause and recalibrate.  This mini-retreat will focus on specific yoga poses, practices and philosophy that purify the body and mind so that we can "clean house" and experience the peace and calm that is our birthright. This workshop will include asana, pranayama, mantra (chanting), mudra (hand gestures) and philosophy to balance the chakras and, more importantly,  clear the 72,000 nadis or energy channels that run through the body; it is said that when the nadis are blocked, we suffer physically and mentally.

Our grounding, calming and complete practice will give you some "you" time to restore balance in the physical and energetic bodies so you can shine at your best.  We will conclude with Yoga Nidra (psychic sleep; a lying-down meditation). We will also explore practical ways to maintain emotional balance and savor the moment during this unique  and stressful time.

Anxious? Fatigued? Depressed or feeling stuck? Sometimes, the bodymind, like a computer, needs a reboot; after we close the applications and re-start, everything works and feels much, much, better.

Restorative Yoga brings profound healing to our our stressed-out, overscheduled bodies and minds, and takes us from a place of "doing" to "being," so we can experience the yogic virtue of santosh (contentment).

No problem: You will have access to the recording for 72 hours.

It will include postures, chanting, philsophy, pranayama, meditation and other practices designed to help understand and calm your mind so you can focus on what is most important to you.  Our philosophical focus will be the mind - what it consists of (antahkarana), its different states or fluctuations (vrittis), and its colorings or obstacles along the path to liberation (kleshas). Understanding the mind is the foundation of Raja Yoga and leads to inner bliss.

Stressed out? You're not alone. Anxiety has replaced depression as America's top mood disorder, affecting 41 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or over 19% of the population according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.

Of course, many of us who suffer from anxiety don't necessarily have a disorder, since it's a natural reaction to stress. But when we get overstressed, our body moves from rest-and-digest mode under the control of the parasympathetic nervous system into the fight-or-flight response generated by the sympathetic nervous system. Being constantly in fight-or-flight mode can lead to sleep disorders, migraines, chronic pain, hypertension, and other problems.

In this workshop, we will focus on practical ways to manage stress and share time-tested methods for improving peace of mind and sleep -- including asana, prayanama (breathwork), philosophy and Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep; which can reduce anxiety and depression and aches and pains, and restore our sense of well-being).

Tired of suffering? Stop trying to fix yourself or the world, and find out who you really are!

The translation and commentary by Swami Tejomayananda makes this immortal subtle ambrosia 'simple to follow and a delight to swallow.'

Our course will include open discussion, self-inquiry, meditation and other practices to help us apply these timeless principles to daily life so that we become happier and less reactive. It is suitable for anyone who is tired of suffering and is seeking lasting happiness.

It will include chanting, pranayama, philosophy and meditation and other practices designed to help understand and calm your mind so you can focus on what is most important to you. Based on the classical, flowing system originated by New York City-based yogi Sri Dharma Mittra, its foundation is the dynamic Shiva Namaskar sequence - which opens the hips and shoulders, makes the spine supple, and unleashes one's full energetic potential.

Tired of suffering? Stop trying to fix yourself or the world, and find out who you really are!

Ishavasaya means "to be clothed or pervaded by the Supreme." The Isha Upanishad is one of the principle Upanishads, the source text for Vedanta or Jnana Yoga (the path of Self-knowledge).

A crisp summary of the direct path of yoga, this Upanishad shows us the way to rise above all our attachments to the finite objects of this world (particularly karma and repetitive thought patterns) and realize the highest, eternal knowledge -- which results in deep inner peace. It permits the use of a healthy blend of lower spiritual practices as a stepping stone to the highest realization, and also includes instructions for the most advanced seekers.

Our course will include open discussion, self-inquiry, meditation and other practices to help us apply these timeless principles to daily life so that we become happier and less reactive. It is suitable for anyone who is tired of suffering and is seeking lasting happiness. No prior yoga or meditation experience is necessary.

This accessible text contains the highest teachings of Vedanta or Jnana Yoga (the path of knowledge) in clear, easy-to-follow verses that include a detailed exploration of the three gunas (qualities of nature) and answer the fundamental questions of life: Who am I, what is this world, and how did it come about? As Swami Tejomayananda writes in the introduction, "Is it a wonder we suffer? We think ourselves to the finite entities when we are the infinite Truth….Knowledge of the Truth alone therefore can liberate us from the bondage of suffering."

Hamsa Gita, sometimes called Uddhava Gita, is part of the Srimad Bhagavatam, in which Lord Krishna appears in the form of a swan and teaches us how to rise above our limited perspective and attain true freedom (the swan is said to be able to separate milk from water – a reference to the jnani concept of viveka, or discrimination between the eternal and the ephemeral). The hamsa's two wings allude to the first two

qualifications of a fit student: viveka and vairagya (nonattachment); both are needed to fly.

Our course will include open discussion, self-inquiry, meditation and other practices to help us apply these timeless principles to daily life. It is suitable for anyone who is tired of suffering and is seeking lasting happiness. No prior yoga or meditation experience is necessary.

Navratri or the Nine Nights of the Goddess starts tonight and culminates with the Day of Victory on Monday, 10/26.  The prominent story associated with Navratri is the battle that took place between goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura, who represents egotism.  During the nine nights, the different aspects of the divine feminine are worshipped; Durga (the fierce warrior, who helps us overcome tamas or inertia), Lakshmi (the goddess of spiritual and material wealth, who helps us overcome rajas or attachment-based action), and Sarswati, the goddess of knowledge and the arts, who represents sattva (purity and harmony).

This workshop will explore these aspects of the Divine Mother, and will include mantra (chanting), philsophy, asana, and pranayama.

Based on the classical, flowing style originated by New York City-based yogi Sri Dharma Mittra, the foundation of our practice is the dynamic Shiva Namaskar sequence - which releases shakti (energy), opens the hips and shoulders, makes the spine supple, and unleashes one's full energetic potential.  We will conclude with Yoga Nidra (psychic sleep; a lying-down meditation).

CYCLING WITH THE MOON:

Aligning Your Period with the Rhythm of Nature

Do you suffer from heavy, difficult, painful, irregular, scanty or fatigue-inducing periods?   Symptoms of PMS?  Peri-menopause? Menopause? Post-menopause?

Perhaps it's because your cycle is not aligned with nature.

In ancient times, women's bodies were attuned to the cycles of the moon.  Ideally, menses takes place during the apana (downward-flowing energy) of the new moon, while ovulation coincides with the ojas (vigor or essential energy) of the full moon.  Aligning one's cycle to nature helps strengthen the shakti-prana (the primordial cosmic energy that governs all physical functions),  rebalance the hormonal system, and rejuvenate the womb and womanly spirit.

In this workshop, we will learn how to use simple,  specific Vedic asana (posture), mudra, pranayama  and lifestyle practices to restore our feminine cycles to the natural rhythms of the moon.

This workshop is suitable for those who are still menstruating (over 18), as well as peri- and post-menupausal women up to age 60.

Participants will receive detailed handouts, so they may follow these practices at home.

FACING FEAR: DHARMA MITTRA VINYASA YOGA WORKSHOP

"Even very little of this knowledge saves a man from the Great Fear,"

-Bhagavad-Gita II.40

The Yoga Sutras states that all fear stems from avidya, or ignorance of one's true nature, and that it manifests in the fifth klesha (coloring) of abhinivesha, or fear of death. While we may not actively be afraid of death, it often manifests in other ways -- such as a fear of spiders, old age, dentists, public speaking/humiliation, heights, etc.

In this workshop,  we wil learn how to identify and face our fears so that they lose some of their hold over us and we begin to experinece the peace that is our true nature. We will also explore fear in our asana practice.

Please note that public space is only available to five people. Your space is not guaranteed until payment is made and a confirmation letter is received.

TAMING THE MIND MAHA SADHANA

DHARMA MITTRA VINYASA YOGA WORKSHOP

Saturday, May 18, 11:30-2:30
Sweet Pea's Studio, 3717 N. Ravenswood Ave. (773.315.5489)

Includes asana, pranayama, chakra-balancing & Yoga Nidra (Psychic Sleep)

"For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, his very mind will be the greatest enemy."     -Bhagavad-Gita

Learn how to make your mind your humble servant -- and not your tormentor! Suitable for all levels, this calming, grounding, and complete practice will leave you feeling refreshed, calm and focused.

It will include postures, chanting, pranayama, philosophy and meditation and other practices designed to help understand and calm your mind so you can focus on what is most important to you.

Understanding the mind is the foundation of Raja Yoga and leads to inner bliss.

Please note that space is extremely limited, and our workshops often sell out. Your space is not guaranteed until payment is made and a confirmation letter is received.

Asanas & More Yoga in St. Charles

Yoga postures are just one part of an ancient science that leads the practitioner towards a state of sattva (peace, purity and harmony) and helps us deal with problems, achieve our goals, and find inner peace.

The science of yoga is as vital and relevant today as it was when it was developed over 5,000 years ago. In this workshop, we will use The Yoga Sutras and other texts to explore practical methods of weaving the classical teachings of yoga into modern, daily life. We will also incorporate chanting and meditation into the practice; participants will be inspired to go from “doing” yoga to living it.

Satsang is a spiritual gathering and includes kirtan, Q & A, meditation and discussion of scripture. It is fueled by questions from the participants. Satsang, or spending time with other aspirants, accelerates one's spiritual practice and removes doubts. Open to all (chairs provided, or you may sit on the floor).

Divine Purification improves physical and mental health and is an essential step along the path of yoga. We will use special breathing, chanting, visualization and concentration techniques to help clear out the nadis (subtle energy channels) and calm the mind. Yogic Diet. The goal of the soothing yogic diet is to create a calm, peaceful mind that is easy to control. In this workshop we will explore the traditional yogic diet and its benefits as well as the reasoning behind it. Participants will also learn practical ways to transition towards a yogic diet and seamlessly weave it into daily life.

Mantra and Vedic Chanting. One of the most efficient ways to calm and focus the mind and destroy negativity is through chanting and mantra. We will explore some of the most important Sanskrit mantras and Vedic chants in this special class. Please bring a mala (108-bead rosary) as we will also practice japa (mantra meditation with beads).

Yoga Nidra is active, lying down meditation that purifies, rejuvenates and energizes all of the body’s systems, bolstering its natural healing capacities and allowing the joints, organs and systems to become healthy, balanced and refreshed. It dispels tension and fatigue in the physical body, calms the mind, and relieves depression, anxiety, headaches, cravings and desires – and puts power behind your thoughts.

Psychic Development is an ancient practice to improve your concentration and put power behind your thoughts. It includes pranayama (breathing) exercises, chanting and meditation, and will help purify and calm the mind and bring you in touch with your inner intuition. Practitioners should have a regular asana practice and a vegetarian diet.
